Title
NARC-008A71: incomplete Roman nail cleaner face
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy nail cleaner of Roman date. It is missing the top of the suspension loop and also the bifurcated tip, due to old breaks. The body is flat, leaf-shaped in form with a central vertical groove. At the top of the blade is a moulded collar comprising double transverse ridges separated by a slight constriction, above which extends the incomplete circular suspension loop. The entire object has a green patina with some pitting from corrosion.

This is an incomplete Roman nail cleaner with parallels noted in examples from Colchester, falling in Crummy's Type 2a nail cleaners (Crummy, 1983: p. 58). These indicate a possible late-1st to 2nd century AD date for the object, c.43-200 AD. Parallels can also be found on this database at SF-752A17, SF-751492, BUC-121275 and NCL-AE0241.
