A National Monuments Plaque at the top of Sir Lowry's Pass, Western Cape, South Africa

Summary

[edit]
Description

SIR LOWRY'S PASS
The precipitous and dreaded Gantouw Pass through the adjoining kloof to the north formed the original route to the Overberg and eastern interior. In 1828 the Governor, Sir Lowry Cole, instructed the Surveyor-general, Major C. C. Michell, to build an improved pass over the Hottentots Holland Mountains. Soldiers and convicts were engaged in the construction of the pass which was named after the Governor and was officially opened on 6 July 1830.
