Description

View inside the Nøgne Ø brewery in Gamle Rygene Kraftstasjon in Grimstad, Norway.

Nøgne Ø was founded 10 years ago, in February 2002, by Gunnar Wiig og Kjetil Jikiun, both tired of the bland Norwegian pilsner and looking across the Atlantic for inspiration from America. They chose the brewery name from Henrik Ibsen's poem Terje Vigen and added "Det kompromissløse bryggeri" to tell everyone they would not make any compromises when brewing beer.

The first three years, Nøgne Ø was located at Bergemoen in Grimstad, but in the fall 2005 they moved into the former hydro electric power plant Gamle Rygene Kraftstasjon where they still are. But just barely. Nøgne Ø has now outgrown their current facilities, production has exploded from 30 hl in 2003 to 4,000 hl in 2010 and around 6,000 hl last year. It doesn't make things easier that they also brew beer for Mikkeller (Beer Geek Brunch, Beer Geek Breakfast and George) and for Beer Here (Mørke)!

Thus, a new and larger brewery is being planned, in an old boat warehouse, which will be renovated this autumn and be ready for brewery construction in the spring 2013. The lease on the current building runs out in 2015, so Nøgne Ø won't have to rush to get the new brewery up to speed.

---
