TheKing, he said, represented the golden head of theimage ; the silver an inferior kingdom which wouldrise after Nebuchadrezzars death ; and a third ofbrass which should bear rule over all the earth.The fourth dynasty from Nebuchadrezzar would beas strong as iron, but since the toes of the imagesfeet were paitly of iron and partly of clay, so shouldthat kingdom be partly strong and partly broken.Nebuchadrezzar was so awed with the interpretationthat he fell upon his face and worshipped Daniel,telling him how greatly he honoured the God whocould have revealed such secrets to him ; and heset him as ruler over the whole province of Babylon,and made him chief of the governors over all thewise men of that kingdom. But Daniels three companions—Shadrach, Me-shach, and Abednego—refused to worship a goldenimage which the King had set up, and he commandedthat they should be cast into a fiery furnace, throughwhich they passed unharmed. Daniel interprets the Dream of Nebuchadrezzar Evelyn Paul 38 NEBUCHADREZZAR of Nebuchadrezzar in the direction of the God ofIsrael. A second dream which he had, he beggedDaniel to interpret. He said he had seen a tree inthe midst of the earth of more than natural height,which flourished and was exceedingly strong, sothat it reached to heaven. So abundant was thefruit of this tree that it provided meat for the wholeearth, and so ample its foliage that the beasts ofthe field had shadow under it, and the fowls of theair dwelt in its midst. A spirit descended fromheaven and called aloud, demanding that the treeshould be cut down and its leaves and fruit scat-tered, but that its roots should be left in the earthsurrounded by a band of iron and brass. Then,ordering that the tree should be treated as if itwere a man, the voice of the spirit continued toask that it should be wet with the dew of heaven,and that its portion should be with the beasts inthe grass of the earth.
