[edit]
Description

Mylonite from Virginia, USA. (cross-section view; ~6.6 centimeters across)

Mylonite is a shear metamorphic rock. It forms by intense ductile deformation of rocks in & along fault zones deep in the crust. Several varieties of mylonite have been described in the geologic literature (e.g., protomylonite, mylonite, blastomylonite, ultramylonite, phyllonite).
