Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Mylonite from the Paleozoic of Scotland. (cross-section view)

Mylonite is a shear metamorphic rock. It forms by intense ductile deformation of rocks in & along shear zones deep in the crust. Several varieties of mylonite have been described in the geologic literature (e.g., protomylonite, mylonite, blastomylonite, ultramylonite, phyllonite). "Ordinary" mylonite has a streaky to banded appearance.

This specimen is from the Moine Thrust Zone in Scotland. Thrust faults are low-angle reverse faults formed by compressional stress. The Moine Thrust developed during the Early to Middle Paleozoic Caledonian Orogeny, a mountain building event. The Caledonian Mountains formed by tectonic collision between the ancient continents of Baltica and Laurentia. Baltica is the Scandinavian paleo-continent (= western Russia + Scandinavia + parts of mainland northern Europe). Laurentia is the North American paleo-continent (= most of North America + Greenland).

Locality: unrecorded/undisclosed site in the Northwest Highlands of northwestern Scotland
