This is a very cheap way oftravelling about the island, six shillingsbeinof the fare from Limasol to Ktema,whereas a private carriage would cost thirtyshillings. Travelling by mail coach, how-ever, is not without its risks, as I shallhave to relate before this chapter closes.The first few miles of the road pass throughland fairly cultivated, dotted with carobtrees, later it gets more barren, and abouthalf-way large spurs of the Troodos Rangerun right down to the sea coast, breakingup the country into very deep and broadravines, turning it into a rocky, barrenwaste. The carriage-road over this part isvery steep, the ascents and descents some-times being from two to three miles longowing to the zig-zags necessary to makethe gradients easier. The last ten or twelve miles of the roadrun within about a mile and a half of thesea on the level, passing Palaeo-Paphos,where the Temple of Venus, to whomCyprus was considered sacred, once stood 178

Paphos. on high ground overlooking the spot whencethe foam born goddess arose. There were two cities called Paphos, one,about two miles due south of Ktema bythe sea shore, the other ten miles east-south-east of Ktema, and about a mileinland. The former was called Neo-Paphos,and the latter Palaeo (old) Paphos. While the padre and I were walking oneday through the bazaar with the DistrictCommissioner, Mr. Wodehouse, we met anold beggar woman. Mr. Wodehouse askedher how it was she came to be in suchreduced circumstances. She replied thatshe had given all her property andpossessions to her nephew, who, thereupon,had turned her out into the streets to bega living as best she could. I am sorry to say this unfortunately wasan instance of a practice that is all toocommon, the children often turning outtheir parents from their home when theyconsidered them too old to work anylonger.
