mehr um Hilfe. Da sprengte ein vornehmer Herr, angeblich ein Graf, hervor und hielt einen Beutel Gold empor; er versprach ihn demjenigen, welcher die Familie des Brückenwärters retten würde. Aber niemand wagte es. Plötzlich kam ein einfacher Arbeiter vorüber. Er hatte einen grauen Arbeitskittel an. Als er die Worte des Grafen vernahm, sprang er in einen kleinen Fischerkahn. Er kam glücklich nach den Pfeilern. Dreimal aber mußte er das Werk wagen. Lauter Jubel erscholl, als es ganz gelungen war. Der Graf wollte dem Arbeiter den versprochenen Lohn geben, der aber sprach: „Mein Leben ist für Geld nicht feil, geben Sie es lieber der Brückenwärterfamilie, die all ihr Hab und Gut verloren hat!"

Es sitzen zu Wien im Kaisersaal Die Fürsten und Helden in reicher Zahl.
Sie haben entsetzet die bange Stadt,
Nach der so gelüstet den Heiden hat.
Und als nun geendet das reiche Mahl Und freudig geleert der Siegespokal,
Spricht einer: „Genug nun mit Sang und Klang!
Nun sagt, wer die beste Beute errang!"
Ein Pole entgegnet: „Des Sultans Gold Hab' ich mir aus seinem Zelte geholt."
Ein Lothringer drauf: „Sein stolzes Panier Erkämpft' ich mit blut'gem Degen mir."
Ein Wiener sodann: „Manch reiches Gewand Entriß ich den Flücht'gen mit dieser Hand."
Ein andrer: „Ich wählte in aller Eil'
Kamele und Pferde zu meinem Teil."
So wußte ein jeder nach seiner Art Zu sagen, was ihm für Beute ward.
Nur einer im Kreise der Sieger saß.
Der über die andern das Wort vergaß.
„Wie stumm doch, Herr Bischof! Bekennt auch Ihr!
Mich dünkt,. Ihr errangt das Geringste schier."
Herr Kollonitsch, also der Bischof hieß.
- ) Johann Nepomuk Vogl ist ein lyrischer Dichter Oesterreichs. Er wurde 1802 in Wien geboren und starb 1866. Nur wenige feiner vielen Gedichte haben dauernden Wert.
