Summary

[edit]
Description

Australian-built CAC CA-18 Mustang Mk.23 G-HAEC of Ray Hanna's Old Flying Machine Company based at Duxford. Previously A68-192, it wears the colours 3 Squadron RAAF. The Mustang flew in several films, including Spielberg's "Empire of the Sun", "Memphis Belle" and Saving Private Ryan". In 2011 it was sold to Germany and became D-FBBD, by this time renamed "Big Beautiful Doll", but on 10 July 2011 it collided in mid-air at Duxford with a French Douglas Skyraider. The pilot, Rob Davies, baled out before the aircraft crashed in a field, while the damaged Skyraider landed safely. Both pilots were OK.
