Description

Common name: Virgin Tree, Mussaenda, Bedina (Hindi), Hanu-rei (Manipuri), Vellaiyilai வெள்ளையிலை (Tamil), Sada patta (Bengali) , Mithai Phool मिठाइ फुल (Konkani)

Botanical name: Mussaenda sp. - [ (mew-say-EN-duh) latinized form of Sinhalese vernacular name mussenda ] Family: Rubiaceae (madder, bedstraw, or coffee family)

Origin: Tropical Africa, Asia, Pacific Islands

Virgin tree is actually a large shrub that can become a small tree. It has medium-sized oval leaves and very prominent display of large, velvety sepals, leaf-like in shape, surrounding small star shaped flowers. Common colors are white and pink. Mussaendas need frequent pruning to encourage more blumes and require a sunny location. It flowers throughout the year.
