MUSKOGEE AND NORTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA 469 Episcopal Church and Dr. M. F. Williams was the Presbyterianminister. While the Phoenix advocated a square deal for the Indians, itsoon began to favor the allotment of Indian lands, and from thetime of the arrival of the Dawes Commission in 1893, it consist-ently supported that body in its efforts toward consummating andexecuting agreements with the various tribes. During its earlyyears the Phoenix gave a liberal amount of space to Indian educa-tion and it devoted a column or more each issue to publishingletters from teachers. For several weeks the Teachers Columncarried on an earnest discussion of the question: Does heat comefrom the Sun? One teacher boldly supported the affirmativeand clinched his argument by asserting that it is customary tocarry an umbrella above our heads to ward off the suns heat.Another teacher just as boldly advocated the negative and provedit by showing that as we approach the sun, the atmosphere gradu-ally gets colder.
