YY. \Y. Wheeler, two white settlers, platteda portion of their land into town lots and brought the Town ofSallisaw into existence. Mr. Quesenbury settled in that neighborhood in 1875, beingperhaps its tirst white settler. The citizens of Sallisaw regard himas the father of their city, as he not only founded it. but has eversince manifested a lively interest in its welfare, alwavs taking thelead in all civic, charitable and educational projects for the better-ment of conditions. When Sallisaw became an incorporated townhe was chosen as its tirst mayor and his administration was charac-terized by honest, efficient business policies. He also manifested aninterest in the religious welfare of the community bv donatingsites for all denominations who desired to build churches. Air. W. K. Whitsett is credited with having located the tirstgeneral store in Sallisaw. lie had been a country merchant, located at Old Childress Sta-tion, an inland division point on the Buttertield Stage Tune, which

HIGH SCHOOL, SALLISAW 1 MUSKOGEE AND NORTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA 541 extended from Muskogee to Fort Smith, but upon the arrival ofthe railroad, he moved his stock of goods to the new town of Salli-saw. Messrs. Quesenbury and Wheeler had also been conductinga country store, a few miles away, for several years prior to thebirth of the new town. Charles O. Frye has also been closely identified with the growthof the City of Sallisaw and the development of the industries ofSequoyah County. He is a Cherokee by blood, was born in theCherokee Nation in 1854 and has resided continuouslv in thatvicinity. He has held numerous positions of honor and responsi-bility, both in the Cherokee Nation and in the service of the Fed-eral Government. During the early eighties he was elected as amember of the Cherokee Senate and a few years later he served asclerk of the Cherokee Commission, in its negotiations with theUnited States.
