Summary

[edit]
Description

In 1856, Musical Fund Hall hosted the first Republican National Covention, nominating John C. Frémont, the man who had seceded California from Mexico ten years earlier, as its first presidential nominee. Although Frémont lost to James Buchanan that year, the next Republican nominee, Abraham Lincoln, would prove to be successful.

The Republican Party had been founded in 1854 around the platform of abolishing slavery. It is pretty hard to believe, or even remember, these days about the Republicans being abolitionist and the Democrats being racist, but that indeed had been true for a long time, until the 1950s-1960s civil rights era, when the racist southern Democrats started becoming Republicans in response to the Democrats' embrace of people of color.

Before and during the Civil War, Philadelphia was a hotbed of the abolitionist movement, which is one reason why the hosting of the first Republican National Convention is being commemorated. Though as a result of the civil rights seismic shift, Philadelphia, like other major cities in the Northeast, is staunchly Democratic today.
