Summary

[edit]
Description

The original Museum for Oceanography existed in the old chemical laboratories of the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Universität (renamed the Humboldt University in 1949), beside the railway line just east of Friedrichstrasse Station at Georgenstrasse 34-36. It was opened on March 6th 1906, in the presence of Kaiser Wilhelm II. Bombed in the war 1939- 1945 and never to re-open, the plaque now adorns the entrance to the fantastic Deutsches Technikmuseum in Berlin. The Museum für Meereskunde (Oceanography) had unsual opening hours of Monday, Wednesday Saturday and Sunday and the contents in those days might surprise modern scientists and oceanographers....Warships, Cannons and Memorial to ships sunken by the enemy. But study of the oceans was important for acquiring and maintaining an empire.

Surving artefacts from the original collection are to be found mainly in Kiel and the Deutsches Technikmuseum in Berlin. A Museum für Meereskunde und Fischerei der DDR opened in Stralsund and in 1958 an Instutut für Meereskunde in Rostock.was created in the GDR.
