Summary
[edit]DescriptionMuseum of Childhood (6952323531).jpg | Cambridge Heath Road, Bethnal Green.Designed by James Wild and built 1868-72 incorporating the iron structure of a temporary museum erected in South Kensington in 1855-6 with the proceeds of the Great Exhibition. When permanent museums were built in Kenisngton the building was offered to any London District capable of taking it. Sir Antonio Brady and other local philanthropists purchased the north part of Bethnal Green for the museum. It housed the Wallace Collection until that moved to Manchester Square and then hosted exhibits appropriate to the trades and industries of East London. In 1974 it became the Museum of Childhood linked with the V&A. The new entrance block dates from 2004. |
