A evidência arqueológica revela-nos que Conimbriga foi habitada, pelo menos, entre o séc. IX a.C. e Sécs. VII-VIII, da nossa era. Quando os Romanos chegaram, na segunda metade do séc. I a.C., Conimbriga era um povoado florescente. Graças à paz estabelecida na Lusitania operou-se uma rápida romanização da população indígena e Conimbriga tornou-se uma próspera cidade. Seguindo a profunda crise poíítica e administrativa do Império, Conimbriga sofreu as consequências das invasões bárbaras. Em 465 e em 468 os Suevos capturaram e saquearam parcialmente a cidade, levando a que, paulatinamente, esta fosse abandonada.
