Description

É com D. Aleixo de Miranda Henriques, alguns anos depois da transferência da Sé para Bragança (1764), que o edifício é sujeito a profundas alterações e acrescentos (estruturação da fachada principal, organização do espaço interno e execução do tecto prospéctico da capela desenhada por Cardoso Borges).

Já antes, com o bispo D. João de Sousa Carvalho - é dele a pedra de armas da fachada -, no fim do seu episcopado (1716-37), se tinham realizado importantes obras. Foi Paço Episcopal até 1912.

O Museu Municipal, para ter mais largueza, é instalado, por esta altura, nas salas do primeiro andar. Em 1935 passa a designar-se por “Museu Regional do Abade de Baçal". Fazem-se obras (1937-40) tendentes ao enobrecimento do edifício e dá-se continuidade a um período de grande actividade, visando o enriquecimento e valorização do espólio. O Museu constitui-se, mesmo, como um dinamizador cultural (destaque para a acção de três bragançanos: O Abade, Raul Teixeira e José Montanha), reunindo um conjunto ecléctico de colecções, com obras de grande valor documental, artístico e histórico.
