Description

Les divinités marines combattent les Géants.(Autel de Pergame)

La face ouest de l'autel de Pergame, dédié à Zeus et à Athéna, a été reconstituée dans la salle centrale du musée. L'autel fut érigé entre 164 et 156 av. J.C. à Pergame (Asie mineure) par les souverains attalides. Il compte parmi les oeuvres les plus marquantes de l'art hellénistique. Il s'élève sur une base de 36 m. par 34 m. Au-dessus de 5 marches s'élève un soubassement composé d'un socle et d'une frise ornée de hauts-reliefs, de 2,3 m de hauteur. Un portique entoure toute la partie supérieure.

La frise longue de 120 m. représente une Gigantomachie : le combat des Dieux Olympiens contre la génération précédente des Géants nés de Gaia, ce qui symbolise le combat de l'ordre contre le chaos.
