English: Murray Library, Anstruther The distinctive Red Sandstone of the Murray Library stands out on the western end of Shore Street. It was opened in 1907.
David Murry was born in Anstruther in December 1829 and died in Bayswater, London January 1907 leaving an estate worth around £203 000, a tidy sum for 1907. He bequeathed £4000 to fund a library for the people of Anstruther in addition to many more around Australia. He and his brother William had moved to Australia in 1853 and they made their money in Adelaide as wholesale drapery merchants and manufacturers of clothing and boots. David went on to become an active Australian politician from 1870 to 1891. David and his wife moved back to the UK in March 1900 and settled in London. |
