Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Murray Edwards College, Cambridge New Hall has a New Name!

When founded in 1954, the College had no endowment and no name so Rosemary Murray (later Dame Rosemary) and her colleagues agreed that the two should be linked: the college should be known as ‘New Hall, Cambridge’ (to distinguish it from the school in Chelmsford and the prison near Wakefield) until a donor or donors endowed it with both a capital sum large enough to provide a very substantial part of its annual costs and its permanent name.

This was realised in 2008 by a £30 million donation from Ros & Steve Edwards of local firm Geneva Technology. The college will be refounded taking their name and that of Dame Rosemary, its first president and the first woman vice-chancellor of Cambridge University, who died in 2004.

The name change will become official on 1st May 2009, but the new name will be used as a trading name until then.
