rench was along the opposite heights,I The road on which we aie travellingintersected the 2 armies, or, so to speak,separated the 1. wing of the British andrt. wing of the French from the mainbodies of their respective armies. Torender the declis*ity more gradual, theroad has been cut through the crest ofthe ridge several feet deep, so as to forma sort of hoUow way. At this point 2Monuments have been erected close tothe roadside ; that on the right (^ in theplan), a pillar to the memory of Col.Gordon, bearing a most touching epi-taph, well worth perusal; that on theleft (5), an obelisk in honour of thej Hanoverian officers of the GermanLegion who fell on the spot. Hereabouts the high road is traversednearly at right angles by a smallcoimtry cross-road. Diuing the firstpart of the action the Duke of WeUmg-ton stood in the angle fonned by thecrossing of these 2 roads, and on thert. of the highway, at a little distancefrom a solitary cbn (^ in the plan), 76 ROUTE 24.—WATERLOO. Sect. I.

Belgium. called the Wellington Tree, from anunfounded report that the Duke hadplaced himself beneath it during theaction. The Duke knew better thanto post himself and his staff close to an ROUTE 24. WATERLOO. ir -was nearly on a line with La BelleAlliance, at some distance on the rt.of the road. The Prussians have erecteda cast-iron monument (^) at a short dis-tance on the left, in memory of their object which must inevitably serve as a i fellow-coimti-vmen who fell here. Thi mark for the enemy to fire at. Uponthe strength of this story, however, theelm, after being mutilated and strippedby relic-himters, was cut down andsold, some time after the battle, to anEnglishman. About half-way down in the hollowwhich separated the 2 armies, and inwhich the most bloody combats tookplace, is the Fai-m of La Haye Sainte (^)close to the roadside on the rt. Itwas occupied by the soldiers of theGerman Legion, and gallantly defendedtill their ammunition was exhausted,when they were literally cut tomurrayshandbookf00murr
