Summary
[edit]DescriptionMummy portrait of a man from Hawara - København NCG AEIN 1425 (06).jpg |
English: - object type: mummy portrait
- painting technique / material: encaustic on linen - type of mummy (if preserved together with the portrait): rhombic-wrapped mummy - description of the depicted person: beardless man - 1919 the skull of the mummy was examined and it seemed, that the mummy had grey hair and worn teeth. The difference in age between the mummy portrait and the actual mummy of the deceased has been seen as a proof for the hypothesis, that people used to sit for the portrait sometime in their flourishing years of age and that this portrait has only later been inserted in the mummy at the occasion of death. More recent analyses though have produced quite different results about the mummy. The general opinion tends today towards accepting the fact, that the portraits have been produced only for the mummification, thus being posthumous depictions inspite of their life-like, individual appearance. - proposed period / date: - (Parlasca 1969-2003) early flavian, ca. 70 AD - (Doxiadis 1995) ca. 25-75 AD - height (of the complete mummy): 170 cm - findspot: Hawara - excavator / first owner: William M. Flinders Petrie 1911 - museum / inventory number: København, Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek AEIN 1425 - bibliography: - Klaus Parlasca, Repertorio d´arte dell´Egitto greco-romano, Serie B, Ritratti di mummie, Volume I, Palermo 1969, cat. 40 - Euphrosyne Doxiadis, The Mysterious Fayum Portraits. Faces from Ancient Egypt, London 1995, cat. 32 - Barbara Borg, Mumienporträts. Chronologie und kultureller Kontext, Mainz 1996, 194 - Barbara Borg, „Der zierlichste Anblick der Welt ...“.
