Medullary rays are formed by the activity of the vascular cambium and are initially parenchymatous. Later in development they may mature into xylem or phloem elements, or they may remain as rays where they work to transport water, minerals and nutrients from the center to the periphery of a root or stem.

Rays in Angiosperm wood consist almost entirely of starch containing parenchyma cells. Tracheids are rarely seen.

Medullary rays range in size from uniseriate (one layer) as seen in Gymnosperms, to multiseriate (many layers) as is seen in many woody dicots.
