Title
muller (plan)
Description
English: Fragment of a stone muller or rubber, sub-triangular in plan, and sub-rectangular in profile and section. The stone is derived from a schorl rock which is metasomatically altered granite composed of quartz and black tourmaline schorl. The source is likely from the margin of the Land's End Granite (Dr Roger Taylor pers comm). The upper surface and the base of the stone are both flat and polished through use, suggesting that it was likely used as a rubbing stone or muller, perhaps within a quern to grind grain. The outer edge of the stone is curved and the two other sides are broken, exposing the variation of crystal sizes within. The muller would have probably originally been ovate in plan. There is some spalling on the upper face, which is caused by natural weathering rather than damage.

Examples of similar rubbing stones have been found on Bronze Age sites in Cornwall, such as the Middle Bronze Age settlement at Trethellan, Newquay, illustrated in Nowakowski (1991) on pages 142-3, Figs.57-58, Nos.86-91 and the Middle Bronze Age settlement at Scarcewater, St Stephens, illustrated in Jones and Taylor (2010) on pages 120 & 127, Figs.58 & 64, Nos.280 & 270.
