| Description |
mule ears, Wyethia mollis, Nevada, Sierra Nevada, Carson Range, Carson Valley drainage, elevation 1585 m (5195 ft). Named for their large, thick, felty oval leaves, mule ears are common and locally abundant mainly on the east slopes of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade ranges, from southern Oregon to east-central California, thence scattered eastward into central Nevada on isolated mountain ranges. When the plants dry up in late summer and fall, even a slight breeze sets up a clattering racket among the stiff dead leaves. Also visible in this image are American tansymustard (Descurainia pinnata), cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), white cornsalad (Plectritis macrocera), and desert peach (Prunus andersonii). |
