Description
English: Mug, mocha ware. "Mocha ware mug with blue band". Mocha pottery- a type of earthenware made to resembled Mocha stone (moss agate) - a milky-coloured stone with moss-like markings in green and reddish-brown. First produced in England in the 1780s and made throughout the 19th century also in France and USA mainly for tavers and humble homes. The wares were decorated with coloured bands of specially prepared slip and the feccts of moss were obtained by letting fall on the wet pottery drops of "mocha tea" (an infusion of tobacco juice in stale urine and turpentine) which instantly ramified into moss, fern, tree- or feather-like shapes. (Penguin Dictionary of Decorative Arts, p. 535).
