English: (public domain image provided by the United States Geological Survey)
In geology, landslide events are referred to as mass wasting. There are many specific types of mass wasting including mudflows, debris flows, earth flows, rock falls, debris falls, rock slides, debris slides, lahars, avalanches, solifluction, slump, and creep. Factors that contribute to landslides include: - loose surface materials - water-saturated soil / bedrock - steep slopes - hillside-conformable discontinuities in bedrock (e.g., joints/faults; bedding planes in structurally-tilted strata) Seen here is a large landslide that occurred in May 2017 along the Pacific coast of California. The aerial photo was taken one week after the event, which destroyed a stretch of Route 1. Locality: Mud Creek Landslide, southeast of the town of Gorda, southern Monterey County, coastal central California, USA (35° 51' 52.49" North latitude, 121° 25' 57.01" West longitude) See info. at: www.usgs.gov/centers/pcmsc/science/mud-creek-landslide-ca... and www.usgs.gov/centers/pcmsc/science/big-sur-coastal-landsl... |
