[edit]DescriptionMt Whitney Panorama, Sierra Nevada, CA 6-16 (27683394770).jpg |
(1 in a multiple picture album) This picture is shot west of Lone Pine, CA about 10 miles off of CA Hwy 395. I am in Movie Flats (location of early Westerns filming) which is part of the Alabama Hills, a volcanic formation of boulders. Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States is not the big mountain on the left side of the picture. Many people would think that. Whitney is in the center of the picture. (Actually Lone Pine Peak) Look for 3 spires just in front of it. It does not look that tall (14.505 feet) but that is because it is set back. Follow the gravel road with your eyes and they further on you will see the zig-zagging road leading up to Whitney Portal from which the climbers begin their ascent. Enlarge to see it more clearly and you'll see a couple of cars heading that way. |
