| Transcript | Mont Blanc and the Arve Valley. The name of this, the highest of the Alps, appeared first in print in 1744, and it was first ascended, by Balmat and Paccard both of Chamounix in 1786. There are three French routes up it and five Italian, and the ascent in good weather takes about 12 hours, and costs with two guides and a night at the Grand Mulet about £12. |
