English: A National Historic Monument, the Church and Monastery at Mount St. Sepulchre are located in Washington, DC.
The Memorial Church of the Holy Sepulchre was designed by the Roman architect Aristide Leonori, and built between 1898–1899. The floor plan of the church is the five-fold Crusader Cross of Jerusalem, and it is built in the Byzantine style after Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, with some modified Romanesque influences. Surrounding the church is the Rosary Portico, with fifteen chapels commemorating the lives of Jesus and Mary. In order to make Christian holy sites from around the world accessible to those who do not have the means to travel, the Franciscan Monks at Mount St. Sepulchre created artful replicas which grace the grounds of their Monastery. Thus, the site is called a Commissariat of the Holy Land. This photograph is a Panoramic Photomerge of Mount St. Sepulchre Franciscan Monastery in Washington, DC. |
