Description

I am at a teahouse 6 kilometers uphill from Chateau Lake Louise. In the thin high-altitude air, I am finding it exhausting, though my Calgary-based mountaineer friend is thinking it's a rather easy hike.

I am at the tree line, more or less. It's just too cold, windy, and dry for trees to grow beyond this point. And indeed this is a very inhospitable environment; as I was having a snack at the teahouse, I could indeed hear a few avalanches.

Mt. Lefroy is on the left, while Victoria Peak, which marks the Continental Divide (as well as the Alberta - British Columbia provincial boundary), is to the right. The passage between the two is known as Abbot Pass, though going to Abbot Pass from this point takes me through the "Death Trap," where many hikers have indeed met their deaths in harsh winter conditions. Safer routes for climbing Victoria Peak exist in Yoho National Park on the British Columbia side.
