Text Appearing After Image:
(By pennissio.i of Arthur Hammersley, Esq.) MRS. HAMMERSLEY BY WILSON STEER The Inteiniational Societys Fair IVoinen^ Exhibition Augustus John in another room—La Giocondametamorphosed. This artist endows everything he touches withstrangeness. There is an extraordinary sug-gestion of a lonely fate about the women hedraws. Their air of resignation is oppressive, and sometimes rather sordid, but the paintingof Seraphita is not sordid. It is a type so remotefrom the normal as to have been a source of con-sternation to the normal visitors who pressedaround it in the exhibition, but it is not moreremote from ordinary womanhood than it is from Seraphita. Balzac created Seraphita as thespirit of platonic love, and environed her innorthern snows. In some of the little Whistlerlithographs of women we have this spirituality oftype expressed, and in amethod, too, which morethan anyone elses escapesthe embarrassment ofmaterial. One of the most in-teresting contemporarypictures near Mr. Laverysgrou
