Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Built in 1915-18, this French Renaissance Revival-style mansion was designed by C. P. H. Gilbert for Grace Millard Knox, widow of Seymour H. Knox, whom was a co-founder of the F. W. Woolworth Company. The house was inhabited by Grace Millard Knox and her children, Seymour Knox, Jr., Marjorie Knox, and Dorothy Knox, and remained the family home until 1936. The house was then inherited by Marjorie Knox, whom lived in the house until 1969, when she sold it to the Montefiore Club. The Montefiore Club built a 20,000 square foot rear addition onto the house to accommodate a gymnasium, locker rooms, and squash courts, with the building being utilized by the club until 1978, when the house was sold to CTG (Computer Task Group) and converted into the company’s corporate offices. In 2020, the house was purchased by Cellino Law, which restored the exterior of the mansion. The house features a stone exterior with casement windows, terraces enclosed by balustrades, doric pilasters and columns, a side loggia with arches supported by columns and a rooftop balcony, french doors with transoms, three french doors in first floor the central bays of the front facade with keystones and arched transoms, a juliet balcony in the central bay of the second floor, which also features a decorative window header, a cornice with modillions and dentils, a rooftop balustrade, semi-circular two-story bay windows on the rear facade, and a modernist two-story rear addition clad in buff brick and concrete. The house is a contributing structure in the Delaware Avenue Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
