Mr. George B. Hartzog, Jr. Director, National Park Service U.S. Department of the Interior Washington, D.C. Dear Mr. Hartzog: On August 25, 1965, a monument honoring all Confederate Soldiers and Sailors and marking the passing of the last veteran, Walter Washington Williams, will be dedicated at the Gettysburg National Military Park and presented to the U.S. National Park. This monument is a gift of the eleven Confederate States and the three border States, Maryland, Kentucky and Missouri and has been sponsored by the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Sons of the Confederate Veterans. Mr. Donal [sic] De Lue, a well known sculptor of New York has created the figure and designed the base which will carry the names of the fourteen states. The bronze figure is now being cast in Italy. Will you do us the honor to accept for the U.S. Government this tribute to the men in Gray who so gallantly fought and died for the Confederate cause? If other engagements should prevent your being with us will you please designate a representative to accept this monument. Very sincerely, Maynelle S. Smith Mrs. Robert Hamilton Smith Chairman of Arrangements, UDC
