Description |
English: White paper with typed black text presented to members of the Committee. These men tell me that this design, while very suitable and in good taste for the monument, cannot be built architecturally correct for less than $50,000. The columns must be taller, while the figure of a private must be at least 7’6” in order to be impressive and suitable for Gettysburg, The foundation must be 5’ in the ground to meet the requirements of the U.S. Parks department. They tell me it will look like a “parlor piece” if it is not made this large, but they like it. I have heard the War Department reserves the right to place all foundations when monuments are to be in U.S. battlefield parks. This will lessen the cost if true. Mr. Walter Hancock, sculptor of Massachusetts and grandson of two Confederate officers, has been highly recommended to me for this work. He is at present completing the Memorial on Stone Mountain. At this point we are sure of only $13,000 and must await action of the other seven states. I feel confident that they will all meet their quota. It has been a great joy to work with this Committee, each representing one of the southern states. I especially appreciate the cooperation and help of the Co-Chairmen, Miss Franklin and Mrs. Cameron. I am also deeply appreciative of the confidence in me and the help of our past president, Mrs. Bachman, and our present president, Mrs. Smith. I am sorry I cannot be with you. Sincerely, Gertrude L. Kibler (Mrs.) Forrest E. Kibler
