Mr. Kittridge A. Wing Supt. Gettysburg Battlefield Site Gettysburg, Pa. Dear Sir, Thank you very much for your letter of Dec. 24 and for the information included therein- I have been Chairman of five (5) monuments placed in U.S. Military Park sites and have had very pleasant and co-operative responses from the Park services and am writing to you asking for your help and advice. As Chairman-General and also as Chairman of a Committee to select a sculptor and a design for a proposed monument to be erected at Gettysburg. This monument to commemorate the passing of the Army and Navy of the Confederate States of America. The Convention in the beginning decided on a figure of Walter Washington Williams of Texas who was the last to die Dec. 15, 1959. On taking Chairmanship I asked the Convention Nov. 1962 to change that to a figure of a Confederate private in authentic uniform- I did this at the insistence of the Governor and Centennial Commissioners of the 14 states that were asked for a quota for the work. My committee and I have raised $31,000 and I hope to get the balance of $5000 that was the goal set. I was not able to attend Convention
