English: In 1883, Crater Lake was named by geologist Bailey Willis with the belief that it was located in a volcanic crater. When Willis discovered his mistake many years later, the name was changed .

Probably one of the photographs taken during the 1888 Mt. Rainier climbing expedition led by John Muir .
