Title
Mouth fragment of bronze socketed looped axe (back)
Description
English: Small mouth fragment of copper-alloy socketed looped axe. The axe had a double-mouth moulding and was decorated with thin rib, possibly terminating in small pellets, on both front and back. What remains of the ribs indicated that the axe was most possibly a Type Sompting axe of the earlier part of the Early Iron Age (750-650). Complete axes of this type have been found in hoards such as Cardiff II (Leckwith), Glamorgan, Wales and Quy Fen, Cambridgeshire.
