Summary

[edit]
Description Arms of Mountbatten (formerly "Battenberg"): Argent, two pallets sable, as borne by Countess Julia Hauke (1825-1895) (created "Princess of Battenberg" by the Grand Duke of Hesse), morganatic wife of Prince Alexander of Hesse, third son of Louis II, Grand Duke of Hesse. The family married into the British royal family (marrying two daughters of Queen Victoria), became naturalised British citizens and in 1917, during WW I, surrendered their German titles for new British titles and adopted as a surname an Anglicised version of their German territorial designation.
