Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Aves; Order: Anseriformes; Family: Anatidae; Genus: Hymenolaimus; Genus species: Hymenolaimus malacorhynchus. Animal characteristics: Identification: The mountain duck is blue-gray in color with a chestnut-speckled breast, yellowish eyes, and a pale pink bill with a black edge; Habitat: Rivers, streams; Diet: Omnivore: algae, invertebrates; Reproduction: Mountain ducks can form very strong pair bonds. They nest from July-December, with a peak in August-October. Six eggs are incubated for one month. The chicks fledge 10-11 weeks after hatching; Behavior: Foraging is done in the morning and evening. This species can be highly territorial; Status: Threatened: habitat destruction, lowering of water quality; Interesting Facts: These ducks have a very low reproductive rate, making them vulnerable to changes in their environment.
