Summary

[edit]
Description

NPS/Patrick Myers In the American West, size and scale are sometimes hard to discern. For instance, the San Luis Valley alone is the size of the state of Connecticut. Though the dunes reach over 750 feet (230m) above the surrounding grasslands - taller than most skyscrapers in American cities - the Sangre de Cristo Mountains rise well over a mile (5,280 feet/1609m) above them!

Mount Herard looms large over the dunes in this recent photo - just another reason people are in awe when they experience this amazing combination of desert dunes and snowcapped mountains!
