Summary

[edit]
Description
English: View of Mount Hellanion from the Saronic Gulf onboard the ship to Poros in close distance from Methana. On the top of the mountain, the visitor can still see the remains of the Mycenaean Sanctuary of Hellanius Zeus (13th? cent. B.C.) under the modern-day Chapel of Prophet Elias. The mountain is the tallest on Aegina (approximately 600 meters). According to the legend, when Zeus brought drought to the island, it was from the top of Mount Hellanion that King Aeacus of Aegina prayed to his father Zeus to stop the drought. When Zeus heard his son's prayers, Aeacus built this sanctuary.
