Description |
English: A square gilt bronze strap fitting with chip-carved zoomorphic ornament of unusual detail and quality on one square face. The reverse shows four bronze rivets, which are c.2mm in diameter and extend 2.5mm from the back of the plate, on three of which are preserved washers some 6mm in diameter and 0.8mm in thickness. These are intended to secure the mount to a lost leather or wooden receiving material, probably a leather strap. The rivets are arranged in a square grouping, each being inset equally from one of the corners of the mount. The chip-carved face has an outer frame 1mm broad, and an inner, recessed frame 17mm by 17mm, on each side of which are two clusters of seven transverse notches, each covering some 3.5mm, alternating with blank mouldings at the centre of the sides and at the corners. The zoomorphic ornament shows a pelleted eye with crescentic surround (typical of Style I) set below a wedge-shaped terminal, from which a guilloche formed of one continuous ribbon in two twists extends to one side. Part of this band is triple and part is beaded within outer strands. Below this are two shoulders or thighs of inverted tear-form, which extend to sharply-angled elbow joints. The lower leg springs up from this angle and then returns upon itself in a hairpin curve. The foot is show as a series of feathered grooves upon the facetted angle of the lower terminal of the leg, on the inside of the curve. Beneath this are sundry triple bands and pellets which suggest animal ornament but which are less intelligible.
This mount can be compared with SF-01C966, FASW-A0BFA1and BH-506F42, all of which are thought to be horse-harness mounts. It may therefore be from a bridle assemblage, or may perhaps be from a personal assemblage such as a sword-belt. |
