Kobad allowed his army three full days to sack the city,and at the end of that time 80,000 corpses were carried outthrough the north gate that the king might enter at thesouth. Even so the Persians vengeance was not sated,and they demanded leave from their king to execute onetenth of the survivors to appease the manes of their owndead comrades.* They bore these wretched victims * Kobads losses had amounted to 50,000, so there were plenty ofmanes to appease.

O THE LAST AGONIES OF AMIDA 33 outside the city walls, and killed them in all sorts ofways. Kobad pillaged the city thoroughly, sending his bootyaway on rafts down the Tigris to Ctesiphon ; and when hehimself departed, he left a certain Glon to hold the fortresswith a garrison of 3000 men. This seems a small enoughforce to man such an extent of rampart : yet at first itproved amply sufficient; and when the Roman generalPatricius attempted to regain the city he was repulsedcompletely and ignominiously, though the Romans weremuch more skilled than the Persians in the conduct of asiege. But Amida was not yet at the end of its agony :and what all the emperors horses and all the emperorsmen had so conspicuously failed to accomplish was reservedfor the grim persistence of an irregular partisan. Farzman was an active local Sheikh who had espousedthe cause of the Romans, and who had made his name aterror to the Persians by a multitude of daring deeds.He was only in command of 500 horse ; and
