Description

La construction de ce vaste monastère que l’on appelle aussi monastère des Hiéronymites est ordonnée en 1501 par le roi Manuel Ier qui choisit les moines de l’Ordre de saint Jérôme pour occuper le monastère. Les moines devaient prier pour l’âme du roi et fournir une assistance spirituelle aux navigateurs portugais partis à la recherche de nouveaux mondes.
