Description

NPS/Patrick Myers Mosca Pass Trail is a trail for all seasons! In winter, snowshoe up the trail to enjoy snowy solitude. March and April are the two windiest and snowiest months of the year in Colorado, including Great Sand Dunes. If you visit on a blustery day, Mosca Pass Trail is a refuge, as tall trees provide a windbreak. You'll hear and see numerous birds, including nuthatches, woodpeckers, kinglets, and more. Mosca Creek is also a nice refuge from the surface heat of the dunes on a summer day. Plan your dunes time for morning or evening in summer months to avoid 150 degree sand surface, then hike forested or alpine trails in afternoon hours. The average high air temperature in July is 80 F. Summer songbirds and hummingbirds make colorful splashes as they flit through the trees.

Fall colors are spectacular in Mosca Canyon. Late September to early October is generally the peak of the aspens.
