Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Arms of Mortimer alias Tanner of Witheridge and of Crealy, in the parish of Farringdon, both in Devon: Argent, on a chief or three Moor's heads in profile couped at the neck sable banded about the temples of the first and gules (Vivian, Lt.Col. J.L., (Ed.) The Visitations of the County of Devon: Comprising the Heralds' Visitations of 1531, 1564 & 1620, Exeter, 1895, p.575; The blazon is printed as "chief sable", with heads "or" with necks "sable". As the necks would thus not show against a chief of the same tincture, and as Moor heads are usually shown "sable", it appears the blazon is confused. It appears that a "chief or" would resolve the confusion). These are canting arms, many families with the name "Moor, Mor-", etc., use Moor's heads.
