Summary

[edit]
Description

The Morris Wide Water Canal Boat Site. Wide water canal sites were built periodically along canals to allow ships to unload cargo while not blocking traffic. In 1996, an extreme thunderstorm pounded Morris with over 15 inches of rain, destroying a dam, and causing the Illinois and Michigan Canal to be drained. With the empty canal bed revealed, seven boat hulls were found at the bottom of the basin. It is thought that these ships were in use in the canal's later active days, and that they sunk to the bottom of the basin after disuse. Eventually, they were burned and forgotten. Only the bottom 1 to 1.5 feet of each boat was still intact, but the hulls allowed researchers to get a better idea of canal boat construction. The hulls are once again at the bottom of the canal.

This is an image of a place or building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States of America. Its reference number is 99001708.
