Doubtless the certainty of the early completion of thetranscontinental railroad from the Missouri River to the Pacific Oceanstopped the development of this southwest route for immigrationand freight, via Utahs southern settlements and the Colorado River. The port of Callville had only a short hfe. In June,1869, the Deseret News printed an article that Callvillethen had been abandoned. This was in connection with theescape of three horsethieves from St. George. These menwrenched four large doors from the Callville warehousefor the construction of a raft, upon which they committedthemselves to the river at flood time, leaving horses andimpedimenta behind. Whether they escaped has not beenchronicled. As late as 1892, the walls of the old storehouse still werestanding, the only remaining evidences of a scheme of broadambition designed to furnish a new supply route for aregion comprising at least one-fourth of the nationalexpanse. 116 p 1 -1 ^-^ s-s-K S^S C-iC
