Summary
[edit]DescriptionMoray House balcony - geograph.org.uk - 1343644.jpg |
English: Moray House balcony. From this balcony, in 1650, Archibald Campbell, Duke of Argyll, watched James Graham, Marquis of Montrose, being led up the Royal Mile to the scaffold. Argyll led the Covenant faction which dominated the Scottish Parliament. Montrose was his arch-enemy. The future Charles II had appointed him the King's Lieutenant-General in Scotland, charged with overturning Argyll's usurpation of power. Once captured, Montrose was hanged and disembowelled without trial. But his death was avenged when Charles had Argyll beheaded after the Restoration. Both men now lie opposite each other in the High Kirk of St Giles.
